The NYSESLAT is the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test which is administered in the spring of every school year. This test assesses a student's English proficiency in:
  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing

Here are a few ways parents can help at home

  1. Read to your child in English and your home language.
  2. Visit your library.
  3. Keep a variety of reading materials at home.
  4. Ask your child questions about what they read.
  5. Take your child to places in the community.
  6. Tell your child stories about your family and teach them native songs.
  7. Talk about what they did in school that day.
  8. Have your child write in your native language and English.
  9. Watch television programs together and discuss.
  10. Have a quiet place at home for reading and homework.

Provides lists of organizations by region throughout New York State. Some of these services include advocacy /community engagement, health care /insurance, housing, employment, legal services, public assistance, and safety. Guides are translated into ten languages.

NYSED: A Guide for Parents of English Language Learners in New York State
Includes Bilingual Education and English as a New Language program descriptions, Frequently Asked Questions, links to ELL parent resources, and tips on “Participating in Your Child’s Education.” Translated into 26 Languages.

NYSED Parents’ Bill of Rights and ELL Parent Hotline
Summarizes rights concerning educational access and programming for ELLs. Translated into nine languages.
The hotline is a way for parents of ELLs to learn about their rights and the delivery of services for their children based on state regulations.
